Nonprofit Board Development

One of our great volunteers recently made a very insightful comment: “nonprofits are one of the few places where the total is less than the sum of the parts.” I have worked with boards who match that description: great individuals, but no real work actually gets done. What experiences have you had on a great board? What makes it work?

Of course, there are many great resources for board development, such as Board Source (www.boardsource.org), but I’m curious to hear about the common wisdom in our community about good boards. Thanks for sharing!
