Strategic Planning for Fire Family Foundation

The Fire Family Foundation (www.firefamilyfoundation.org) was created in 2008 as the charitable wing of the Firefighters First Credit Union, to offer immediate assistance to firefighters and their families, fire victims, fire departments, and charities. As a new and growing organization, FFF is in the process of going from an all-volunteer organization to hiring their first Executive Director. Tasked with continuing growth, the new ED wanted to talk with an organizational development expert to identify goals and prioritize them. Heather, JRP volunteer extraordinaire, who has worked in the nonprofit sector for many years and now works in capacity-building. Heather’s normal consulting rate is $150 an hour, but she generously donates her time to JRP clients with budgets too small to pay her. Heather and Robin worked together for about six months to sort out all some of the chicken-or-egg questions: do you build programs first and then find money to support the programs? Or do you train the board to raise funds and build programs accordingly? Due to Heather’s help, Robin and her board have a lot more focus on their mission and clarity on how to accomplish that mission.
