Good Accounting Makes Good Neighbors

NEYOK, the phrase is actually ‘good fences make good neighbors,’ but good accounting is crucial to nonprofit success. Since 1998, Neighbors Empowering Youth ( has implemented technology service programs to bridge the digital divide, especially focusing on NorthWest Pasadena. They started as a grassroots organization, refurbishing computers in the founder’s garage and giving them to low-income families. They have grown and now have a community education center with services ranging from basic computer skills classes, robotics and hardware engineering. Many of their resources are donated, including their inventory of computers and their Executive Director’s time, so their cash budget doesn’t reflect the size of the organization. They asked JRP to pair an accountant with them to make sure that their financial policies and procedures are solid, their bookkeeper is well-trained to maintain accurate records and their board understands their financial position. Janice, a volunteer with a long background in accounting for both nonprofits and for-profits, is currently reviewing their process, which will help them continue to grow and help even more people have the technology skills needed to work, live and play in the 21st century.
